It was a phone interview, and it was pretty thorough. They asked traditional questions, and I had time at the end to ask questions. They also talked about how they collect soil samples, run labs, and teach master gardeners about soil mechanics.

I applied online at USAJobs. A couple of weeks after applying, I got a call to schedule a phone interview. During the interview, there were 3 people on the panel who each asked me two questions. An HR person was also there, listening and asking clarifying questions at the end. About a week or two after the interview, they called to offer me the job. The process slowed down a bit after that, and it took almost 5 months from when I applied to get the final written job offer.

It took about 4.5 months from applying to starting the job, and the questions for the GS 11 level were pretty basic. The interview had two people, the Area Engineer and the Interim Supervisor. There were some big issues though. The Area Engineer said it would take 2 months to start, but it took way longer. I didn't know any better and planned my move based on the start date they gave me, spending a lot on relocation, only for HR to tell me the job wasn't ready. I even volunteered for free for a while. Other agencies usually give a stipend for food for volunteers, but NRCS didn't. They also promised relocation help. But since I moved before the official start, HR said I couldn't get it. The last big problem was when the Area Engineer said it was super important to train at another field office for a whole week. I did what they said, but then found out none of the travel costs like gas, hotel, or food were covered or paid back. My family and I ended up owing about $10,000 because the Area Engineer gave bad or unclear info that HR hadn't approved.
