After my PhD mentor made the initial connection, I had a phone interview. Then, we had a relaxed chat where we talked about my research, my career goals, what I'm interested in, and my skills. Since I was already working for another PI in Research, we also chatted about my current work and what I was hoping to get from a new role, like the kind of work, the schedule, and tuition help. A bunch of other emails, calls, and casual meetings went on before the university sorted out joint funding with the research department I was going to join.

The interview process involved two interviews, one with HR and one with the Principal Investigator. It felt intimidating, but they were quite nice. They really delved into my experience. It definitely helps if you do some research on the studies they're currently conducting beforehand.
