First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at National Western Life Insurance.
Project Manager
Standard protocol: meet with HR, then second/third interview with teams and main hiring manager. For the technical or IT PM roles insurance background wasn't absolute necessity, but is definitely a plus.
- What is one of your strengths and one of your weaknesses?
Sales
Straight forward interview questions with a few people. Questions primarily focused around your accomplishments and the value you can bring to the organization. Interview were usually no longer than 30 minutes but may vary depending on individual hiring manager format.
- What makes you feel you are qualified for this role?
Actuary
I was contacted by HR about half a week after I applied. An in-person interview was scheduled for a week later. Upon arrival, I checked in and waited to meet with an HR representative who then led me upstairs for the interview. I had a pretty casual one-on-one with a VP from the actuarial department, who would have been my direct manager. I felt really good about the interview and waited two weeks for a response, at which point I was informed that another candidate was selected for the role.
- Can you describe a situation where you used problem-solving skills in your academic or professional life?
Software Engineer
The interview process was straightforward, involving one round with the hiring manager and the VP. The discussion focused on company culture, interpersonal skills, and full-stack technical expertise. They asked thoughtful questions, indicating a genuine interest in finding a suitable engineer. The process was efficient with prompt feedback; however, I accepted a more competitive offer elsewhere.
- Can you summarize your development experience that is relevant to this role?
