National Urban League Interview Questions
& Process

I applied by word of mouth and met with a recruiter. I gave an overview of my work experiences throughout Mass. After that, I was assigned to maintenance details at a church, which lasted about 1 year. Then, general maintenance at a private elementary school for 3 1/2 years. My last assignment was general maintenance for a local business for about 1 month.

Interestingly enough, I felt unwelcome as soon as I stepped foot in the interview. Moreover, the questions asked by the interviewer seemed to be intended to steer me away from the position. I was taken aback with the overall tone of the interview. As a POC, who grew up in a predominantly Black/Latino community, it was both off putting and offensive that the interviewers ( who happened to be Caucasian) without warranting, questioned my authenticity and intent. Needless to say I was not impressed and accepted another offer elsewhere.

The hiring manager sent me the interview steps. It was detailed and the questions helped me understand the role better. I was surprised to do a file review, but I guess it's important because of government funds and paperwork is key to keeping that funding.

I was interviewed over zoom and the conversation went really smoothly. I think more authentic conversations should happen. The tone felt almost robotic. It made me question my place in the organization because this person was clearly misplaced.
