First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at National Renewable Energy Lab.
Postdoctoral Researcher
It was an easy interview process. I was flown out for an on-site interview where I gave a 45-minute research talk and met with several team members. There were no unexpected issues, and everything was well-managed regarding preparation.
- Long-term, would you be seeking an academic role or staying at this lab full-time?
Researcher
The whole interview took about 2.5 hours. It started with a 5-minute intro, then a 20-minute presentation that anyone in the company could attend. After that, there was a 40-minute Q&A session about the presentation. Then, there was a 1-hour interview with behavioral questions like 'tell me about a time when...'. Finally, it wrapped up with a 30-minute one-on-one chat with the hiring manager.
- Can you share an experience where you disagreed with a colleague and describe the result?
- Tell me about a time you encountered a conflict with a coworker and how it was resolved.
- Describe a situation involving a disagreement with a coworker and its outcome.
Postdoctoral Researcher
It was just a phone interview. They asked a lot of technical questions about my PhD thesis, publications, and the fields I would be working in. Communication wasn't great over the phone though, so I missed a few questions. It was a tough phone interview, but I ended up getting the job.
- Could you describe your PhD thesis?
- Can you tell me about the paper [redacted]?
