The interview process was alright. I invested time and made it to the second round with leadership, but then they ghosted me. I get that they might have chosen another candidate, which is fine, and I also understand not replying to everyone in the early stages. But it was pretty rude to not get back to me at all, even just to let me know. Seems like basic courtesy. It says a lot about how much they care about other people. This experience kind of soured my opinion of NOLS, even though I've been a participant in their programs before.

I applied online. It was a simple application with a few essays. Then I had a Zoom interview. It was the worst interview experience I've ever had. I think they were trying to do DEI/Anti-bias interviewing, but it felt like being interrogated for an hour. They read every question from a script, and each question had multiple parts. If they want to do Anti-bias interviewing, they need training on how to do it so it doesn't feel abusive to the interviewee.

It was a phone call that lasted about an hour with five team members. They asked a bunch of questions, both about dealing with people and technical stuff. They kept stressing that they were more focused on finding someone who would fit in, rather than just getting the 'right' answers. So, if you're getting ready for this interview, definitely spend some time thinking about who you are, both at work and outside of it, because work-life balance is a big deal here.

You'll go through a month-long instructor course first. Then, during your initial courses, experienced instructors will closely evaluate your work, teaching style, and technical abilities. The next part of the evaluation focuses on your teaching skills and capabilities. You'll have opportunities to teach various courses, which helps you grow in that area. After completing the course, you might get a contract to work. Realistically, you'll probably only get one offer in your first year, unless you're open to proctoring a semester and working multiple sections for free.
