First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at National Information Solutions Cooperative.
Software Test Automation Developer
First, there were some online cognitive and behavioral tests, then the first interview, which was a pair programming exercise where I had to write a small function. After that, I had a quick chat with HR. The next interview was with a panel of interviewers who asked a mix of technical and general questions. Everything was done remotely.
- What criteria do you use to decide whether a test is a good candidate for automation?
Manager
I was headhunted by NISC for an open position. The process involved several phone screenings, a couple of tests (personality and aptitude) that I had to complete on my own time, and then a panel video interview. I left with a strange feeling about the company. It was odd how many times they asked me why I wanted to work there, especially since they reached out to me. During the panel interview, the most senior person commented on my age, suggesting I might be too young, despite my current role being more senior than the opening. It felt like the company culture might be stagnant, with leaders out of touch. Nobody on the call, not even HR, addressed the inappropriate comment. The recruiter also explicitly stated they don't offer competitive tech salaries, although they do have a good 401k match after a year and an outdated PTO policy. They need to update their PTO to be more competitive, as it's a low-cost benefit. After all the multiple rounds of interviews and tests, NISC failed to follow up at all, which was unprofessional given they initiated contact. It was a complete breakdown in their recruiting process and a lack of basic courtesy.
- Can you tell me about your experience using (XYZ) software?
Software Engineer
I applied online and after about two weeks, I got an interview. First, we took a tour of the building. Then, the manager asked me some behavioral questions. After that, I had a peer programming interview with three engineers. They said it was peer programming, but I ended up doing it all myself and had to talk through my thoughts the entire time. The other engineers seemed pretty disengaged and focused on their own work, which was really awkward. The programming part involved two questions: one about string compression and another related to matrices. This lasted over an hour. Afterward, I met with the manager again for more behavioral questions. They said I'd hear back within a week, but I never did, not even an email saying I didn't get the offer. It felt like a complete waste of time.
- What makes you want to join this company?
Operations
First, there was a screening call, followed by a main interview with the department. The main interview focused on the job description, industry standards, your personality, and what you expect. The screening call was 30 minutes, and the main interview was 30 minutes to an hour. It was an easy process overall.
