Operations Analyst
I had a 30-minute phone chat with HR, who was really nice. The next day, I had another 30-minute call with the hiring manager, also very friendly. The week after, I did a four-hour in-person interview with four people. It took a whole day off work. Everyone was nice and easy to talk to, and it felt like a great interview. The fifth person I was supposed to talk to wasn't available then, so they said I'd have a final phone interview with them. After some emails, this person wanted to meet in person, just to work around their schedule. So, I had another in-person interview. I was hoping to meet another nice person, but this one was super unfriendly and rude during our 30 minutes. I wanted to finish the interview fast because I knew working with them would be tough. No updates from them after that.
- What is your approach to resolving a penny discrepancy on a trade?
Web Developer
So I was brought into a conference room and this young woman went over my resume and then immediately went to the whiteboard for a programming problem. The problem was kinda weird and not realistic, and she explained it poorly, even contradicting herself a couple of times, which made it way harder than it needed to be. If she'd explained it clearly and left me alone, I could've finished it fast. But she kept interrupting me, messing up my train of thought. She wasn't friendly at all. She seemed to dock points because I wasn't totally sure about the exact parameter order for setTimeout(), which I've barely used. Then she asked another question, also not hard in itself, but she phrased it in a super complicated way. When I suggested using CSS3 flex, she shot it down because she didn't want to use third-party libraries, even though flex isn't a library. I ended up having to use older, less efficient methods, and she still kept interrupting, like she had a specific way she wanted it done. I basically checked out because it felt like she was against me. Then a second programmer, a young guy who looked half asleep, came in. I was worried because he seemed to have already decided against me. I'm older than both of them, and I felt that was a factor. He asked some general questions about my experience, which I answered fine, but I had to carry the conversation because he was barely engaged. After that, a third interviewer came in and asked how I thought it went. I said I wasn't sure but figured it was okay considering everything, though I didn't mention the bad interviewing. He then said the feedback from the other two was that it wasn't going well. I was surprised and suggested it might be about 'cultural fit' and 'age'. He mumbled something and I was shown the door.
- How can you pause the handler for keyboard strokes on an input field so that the process only continues after the last keystroke?
- Implement logic to delay processing input from a keyboard until the final input event.
Software Engineer
The hiring process spanned two weeks. I was first contacted by HR, and then a coordinator reached out to schedule a call with an engineer. I had a straightforward phone interview, and later that day, I received a call to come in for an onsite interview. The onsite consisted of two technical interviews and one with the Hiring Manager. A planned meeting with the VP did not end up happening. Subsequently, I received an email for an additional phone interview. After that, I got an email stating they were looking for the best fit for the role. Overall, I got a good impression of the team and their work, and the work environment seemed good.
- Can you explain how to find the sum of numbers in an array, considering specified ranges?
- What is the approach to finding the common ancestor of two nodes in a Binary Tree?
- How do you calculate the length or distance between two nodes in a Binary Tree?
Senior QA Analyst
I had an initial telephonic screening where they mostly asked about my background. Then, the engineering manager gave me a couple of scenarios and asked me to create end-to-end test cases for them. This included outlining the steps, identifying necessary test data, defining test cases, and specifying expected results. For example, they asked for a test case for cancelled trades.
- Can you provide test cases for the scenario where trades are cancelled?
- Please provide test cases for purchasing 100 IBM shares at $10 each at 4:00 PM Pacific Time.
- Could you test whether a cash reconciliation is generated when the cash difference exceeds 2%?
