First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Murphy Oil Corporation.
Cashier
You submit your application online, then you wait for them to contact you for an interview. It's beneficial if you visit the store and speak directly with the manager, as they can access your application. You need to successfully complete an assessment before your application is fully submitted, which is quite straightforward. After that, they'll call you back, and you'll have a brief conversation with the manager. They will inquire about your previous work experience and discuss details like how frequently you receive raises.
- Can you tell me about your previous experience?
Cashier
I applied at Murphy's for about a year and a half before finally getting an interview. I got a call some weeks after applying, and the interview was two days later. It took place outside by the gas pumps with the store manager and his boss. They were 15 minutes late. They seemed to have already decided to hire me because they didn't ask many questions, probably because I only have a couple years of experience. They spent most of the time explaining the job and how they promote from within. They asked if I wanted part-time or full-time, but said they only hire part-time cashiers, though I'd get full-time hours. They asked where I was working and when I could start, and I said I'd give two weeks' notice, which they really liked and admired. They emphasized the priority of being able to cover shifts on short notice. They also stressed that selling is mandatory, like informing customers about sales on water or cigarettes. They asked if I could pass a drug test. The store manager took my license for a background check while his boss and I chatted about the job. The boss asked about my background, and I disclosed a theft conviction. He said he wanted to hire me regardless and respected my honesty, but couldn't approve the background check himself. They really liked me and mentioned the starting pay of $8.00/hour, but I negotiated it higher. They said they'd call pending the higher-ups' decision on my background check and that I'd take the drug test then. I thanked them for the opportunity. The whole thing involved both of them interviewing me outside, explaining the job, and taking my license for background info. I dressed nicely for the interview. Edit: I got a call a few days later saying they couldn't hire me because the system rejected my background check, and they were sorry because they both wanted to give me a chance. He mentioned the system rejects it and deletes you, and he couldn't override it or provide contact info to do so, suggesting they rely heavily on the system.
- What is your current address?
- Can you be available to work on very short notice or until midnight?
- Is there anything in your past that I should be aware of?
Cashier
I sent in an application online for a cashier job. The application had a lot of questions to see if I'd be a good fit for them. A few days after I applied, I got a call for an interview. The interview went well, and they asked standard questions you'd expect. They also told me about the company's benefits and what's expected of employees. After I interviewed on-site with the store manager and district manager, they offered me the job and I had to do a drug test and background check. They said it would take a few days for the results, but since they had an employee leave, they could speed things up, so I started about 2 days later.
