Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at MSD.
Microbiologist
The interview process was a while ago, but it was a good experience. Communication was clear, and they followed up promptly. The interviewers were nice, and HR made me feel comfortable as a newcomer. I'm not sure about the process now, but they are a major employer, so it's probably still good.

Principal Scientist
I applied for a Principal Scientist role at MSD animal health in the Netherlands. It took about two months from application to the interviews. I had two interviews with four senior scientists. Both the technical and behavioral parts of the interviews went well, and I felt confident I was the right candidate and would get an offer. However, the final decision was surprising. The recruiter said, "Unfortunately, we've decided to move forward with other candidates. It's not that you didn't make a good impression – you most certainly did. But we had the chance to speak with candidates with similar backgrounds who are already living in the Netherlands. This is the main reason we chose to proceed with them." It makes me wonder why they selected me for an interview if they preferred local candidates. They claim to support diversity and inclusion, yet they prioritize local hires.
- Can you tell me about yourself?
- What do you do in your free time outside of science?
- How would you handle managing individuals who are older than you?
Senior Scientist
Had two interviews. First was with an HR person and the Hiring Manager. Second was with the Hiring Manager, the team (including a joint lunch), the department head, and HR. The atmosphere was always very friendly and the process professional. Typical questions about past experience, career aspirations, and salary expectations were asked. Parts of the interview were in English. There was an opportunity for my own questions. In the first interview, there was also a small task: writing a study summary.
- Could you tell me a bit about your previous work experience?
