Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Mozilla.
User Researcher
The people were nice. It was a normal interview process. They asked typical questions about my past experience, my thoughts on research methods, and asked for examples of projects. It moved fast. First, I spoke with a recruiter. Then, I spoke with the hiring manager. After that, I had one-on-one meetings with some people from different departments. Finally, I gave a presentation.
- Can you share an example of a research project that did not go as expected?
User Experience Designer
The entire hiring process spanned two weeks. About a week after I applied, I got an email and had a phone screen the very next day. Then, I had a video interview two days after that, followed by a second video interview the week after. A few days later, I found out they decided to hire someone internally. The first interview involved talking with a UX Designer where I had to present and explain a previous project. The second interview was with a Design Engineer and included a brief technical engineering test, which I think they only give to people who say they have coding experience. This test covered HTML/CSS and JavaScript. The interviewers were great to chat with and clearly enjoy their jobs at Mozilla. I also interacted with two HR staff members, who were very communicative. They have a really efficient system, which I didn't expect from a big company. I'm impressed!
- Can you describe your UX process?
- What would you say is your biggest weakness?
- How do you approach designing for mobile versus web platforms?
Senior UX Designer
HR/Recruiter screening and a Hiring manager interview were the parts I experienced. I didn't make it to the later stages. After some 'oops errors', I got an automated rejection email, not a human one. For the stages I did go through, after not hearing back from the recruiter for two weeks following her email, and then the hiring manager sending me an email meant for another candidate (with their name and company), I was done. It's hard to tell the organizational structure from this, which often reflects the work environment.
- Tell me about a time you had to deal with a difficult person and how you managed the situation.
- What do you consider your biggest weakness or least favorite aspect of design work?
