The role looked interesting and seemed like a good fit for a software engineer with a physics PhD, given its C++ and statistics requirements. However, the recruiter asked for a Python test, which was surprising given Python wasn't on my resume, though I do have experience in physics, maths, CS, Verilog, C++, MATLAB, and SQL. The recruiter then suggested Python was crucial, which felt strange considering how much was accomplished without it previously.

I applied for a remote Data Analytics Engineer role and was sent a Hackerrank challenge with programming questions that needed optimization and many tests, plus data questions using SQL. They were excited after I finished the challenge and called me, but when they found out I'm in the EU, they ended the process because they can't hire there and need someone in locations like London, Berlin, or Paris. It was a waste of time.
