First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at MoveOn.
Manager
Had a recruiter call, then got a short assignment. After that, I did a group interview with people from different teams. Everyone was nice and explained things well.
- What makes you want to join this company?
Social Media Manager
The interview process was laid out clearly: a recruiter phone screen, then a writing test, and finally a panel interview with the hiring team. It took six weeks in total. Out of over 300 candidates, only 4 made it to the final round. A weird thing happened in the panel interview where they wouldn't make facial expressions or ask follow-up questions, saying it was to ensure everyone had the same experience and to judge qualifications, not interview skills. I thought it was counterproductive since you need follow-ups for good info. After all that, they sent a generic rejection email saying they chose someone more qualified, but then they reposted the job, starting over. It felt like they didn't know what they wanted.
- Can you describe a challenging project you've handled?
- What methods do you use to evaluate social media performance?
- How do you handle managing several competing priorities at once?
Software Engineer
The whole thing took like 2 weeks. A few days after applying, I got a link for a testdome test from moveon.org. It's pretty straightforward if you know SQL, python, and web stuff. After passing that, DRIconsulting reached out. I'm guessing moveon uses them for some of the interviews? They asked me to pick a time for a phone call. During the call, they hit me with some technical questions that were scenario-based. The interviewer didn't seem technical and sounded like they were reading from a script, making the questions sound really weird, and they didn't offer any clarifications. Some of the questions were even system design related, which wasn't even in the job description. I didn't make it past this round in the end.
- What do you understand about moveon's mission/goal?
- How would you debug an issue?
- What would be the debug process?
Fundraiser
So I had this initial interview where I answered some questions and asked some of my own. They told me about some parts of their donor retention they wanted help with. I talked about my fundraising philosophy and mentioned I’m usually a change agent and saw some key areas for improvement. Then I moved to the second round, which was a writing and editing task. I did the assignments, but then they asked for the reasoning/methodology behind my writing topics. I didn’t get to the next stage, which is fine. But I’ve noticed they’re using some of my writing ideas from my samples in their MoveOn emails. It’s cool they took some advice, but it feels exploitative to have your ideas used after not getting the job.
- What is your fundraising philosophy?
- Can you explain the reasoning behind the structure of your funding requests in the writing samples you provided?
