I had an internal referral and the first step was a recruiter call. Then there was a 1-hour interview with an Engineering Manager which was the first of a 3-stage interview loop. The recruiter was really good about giving info for each stage so you could prep. The initial 1-hour call felt like a grilling, no real conversation and they seemed to be sticking to a script. I felt it didn't go well, but then I was invited to the 3-stage loop. These were more conversational, but still felt scripted. The systems design interview was manageable if you prep for it (like looking up the Spotify top k problem). I didn't get an offer, just a generic rejection email with no feedback, which left me in the dark about what happened, especially since the last three stages felt pretty good. Given the time spent prepping and interviewing, some feedback would be appreciated. My feedback to Monzo would be to provide candidates with feedback, especially after they've gone through all the stages, and to improve interviewer skills as they seemed inexperienced or not very good, lacking flow and personality, making it feel like talking to an AI.

Behavioral Technical

The recruitment process kicked off with a recruiter call, followed by a behavioral interview with a Senior Engineering Manager. While I appreciated the talent acquisition team's organization, I found the interview format where only one person conducted it to be suboptimal, as I believe interviews are best conducted in pairs to mitigate bias. Unfortunately, the feedback from the talent team was lacking, and they did not respond to my requests for more detailed feedback from the interviewer. Despite having heard positive things about Monzo's hiring process, my experience was disappointing. Candidates should ideally receive respectful and constructive feedback.

The interview process at Monzo was pretty solid, much like what you'd see at places like Meta or Google. My experience as a candidate was great, though getting an offer definitely colors that a bit. The only real downside was that the questions and overall difficulty felt a bit tougher than for similar roles at other companies. You'll need a good amount of specific examples and discussion points from your past work. They really dig deep, so be prepared! But if you do the prep work, you'll find it's a process that really helps you understand the role and expectations. The candidate pack was super clear and helpful. Plus, after the main interviews, I got feedback from the recruiter, which was useful. It led to some really interesting and open conversations where they weren't shy about discussing past challenges and current opportunities. They were also really organized and flexible with scheduling, which was a lifesaver since I was interviewing with other companies at the same time. It felt like a genuine two-way street; they clearly wanted to make sure it was a good fit for both of us. After getting an offer, they were great in helping me decide, even with competing offers. Negotiations on start date and salary were quick and professional, and I learned their compensation is pretty formulaic to avoid bias. I also got to chat with potential teammates and colleagues, even attended a company all-hands, which gave me a real sense of the culture before I even started. I'd interviewed there before years ago, and the recruiting experience has improved a ton. If you're thinking about applying, I'd say go for it – you'll probably be as pleasantly surprised as I was.
