First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Montclair State University.
Graduate Assistant
I submitted an online application, and if selected, I received an email within a few days to schedule an interview with the department I was interested in. The interview was conducted via Zoom.
- Can you introduce yourself?
- What are your strengths?
- What are your weaknesses?
Professor
The interview process was really smooth and the team at Montclair State University did a great job organizing everything. Everyone on the team was super approachable and created a really friendly vibe. I was impressed by the university's values, and it's also my alma mater.
- Can you describe your teaching style?
Assistant Professor
It started with a Zoom screening, then came the on-campus visit. The committee asked about my scholarship, teaching, and practice. I had to get ready for a job talk and a teaching demo. I also had several meetings with faculty, staff, and students.
- Can you talk about how you show your teaching philosophy?
- Tell me about your scholarship.
- Tell me about your teaching.
Coordinator of Special Projects and Events
I got an offer for an initial interview but wasn't told that 6 other people would be on the Zoom call, which was a bit of a shock. About a week after, I got an automated message saying they had moved on with other candidates. Then, two days later, I got a direct email from the department's secretary asking me to come in for an interview. I told her I was confused because I had already received the automated response. Anyway, the second interview was in person and had the same people from the first one. It felt like they didn't have any new questions for me and I was answering the same questions again. Towards the end, a search committee member casually mentioned that the process might take a while. At the time, I was also interviewing for another job I didn't really want but it was something. That job offered me a position, and when I asked the MSU search committee about their timeline, they said, 'We haven't offered the role to anyone yet and don't know how much longer it will take. We understand if you need to move forward since you have an offer.'
- What would your first day entail if you were hired as a coordinator?
