First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Monash University.
PASS Leader
First, I had to complete an application form. If they were interested, I received an email inviting me to a video interview. Recently, it seems they've changed it to a group interview, but I can't confirm that. It was pretty straightforward, and I got the offer about two weeks later. They asked about four questions in total.
- What makes you a good fit for this position?
Student Worker
It was a panel interview that had a student from the university, the HR representative, and the head of the department. The interview questions were about the job description, my problem-solving skills, communication skills, and my hard and soft skills. I was very nervous and tried to answer as best as I could, but I forgot to smile and was a bit too rigid with my answers.
- What makes you want to work here?
- How do you see yourself fitting into this position?
- Describe a time you had to lead through a challenging work situation.
Research Fellow
First, you'll need to introduce yourself and give us some background on your experience. Then, we'll dive into some technical questions related to the specific research area in engineering, probing into detailed aspects of the field that are key to our selection criteria. We'll also ask for real-world examples or experiences to back up your answers. Finally, we'll discuss your future plans in the field, including any areas you're interested in exploring or researching.
- Tell us about yourself.
- Share your experience with *** and how you've used it professionally.
- How do you keep up-to-date in your research field and integrate new discoveries?
Coordinator, Education Services
The interview process was alright, but it required an in-person attendance. I had to take time off work and made a one-hour train journey with two changes. The panel had three members: the direct manager, who was promoted from the role being advertised, her manager who led the panel, and an external staff member. They took turns asking questions, but the two younger staff members would look to the chair for approval before confirming they were satisfied with my answers. It became clear that the panel was very biased, with the chair making all the decisions. When she informed me two days later that I wasn't successful, I learned they had only interviewed three candidates, and the job was offered to an internal employee already in the team. This felt like another 'compliance-driven interview' to facilitate an internal promotion. It was quite disappointing.
- Could you tell me about your greatest strength?
- What would you say is your primary area for improvement?
- Can you share examples of your contributions to process improvement initiatives?
