I was given a writing assignment to complete and had to take a simple computer skills test and a really hard IQ-type test that covered verbal, spatial, and math. The IQ test was timed, so you really need to be able to focus without any distractions for the entire duration. After that, they emailed me to offer me the job and schedule a call to go over the orientation. This call wasn't an interview, as I had already been selected; it was just to explain the job, what's expected, and how to use their system for managing projects. I've heard people guess that they use the writing samples from candidates who weren't hired for their test prep guides, but I can confirm that's not happening – I worked there for a bit after my interview and know for a fact they don't steal people's work, unlike some other places I've worked. I'll share more about what it's like as a contractor in the employer reviews.

I applied on Friday and on Monday I got an email asking for writing samples for three test prep questions and answers. It took a week to hear back, so I followed up with the recruiter. The next day, they sent me an assessment test and said that after reviewing my sample and assessment results, they might move forward. I really disliked the assessment test and didn't understand why it was needed, it felt outdated and repetitive. I finished the assessment, and another week passed without hearing from the recruiter. I sent another follow-up email and still haven't heard back (it's been a week). The job posting was up for over 30 days with more than 1,100 applicants, so I can only imagine how many free work samples they received and how many candidates they ghosted! I was so sure I'd get this job because they required both a cosmetology license and an English bachelor's degree, which is unusual, so I'm really disappointed and annoyed that I wasted my time on this process just for them to take my work and the work of the 1,100 other people for free!!! Lesson learned: DON'T SEND FREE WORK TO THESE PEOPLE!!!!

Communication was solely via email and very formal. No phone calls were made, which felt stand-offish and cold. I received an email requesting a writing sample, which I submitted. Afterward, I was asked to complete a typing test and an aptitude test, which I found off-putting. The reason for these tests as part of the position was not explained. Statistically, it's proven these archaic tests don't fully demonstrate a candidate's ability to succeed. I viewed this as a negative experience and was concerned about how these tests were administered and communicated.

Applied on the website and got an email link for a sample proofreading task. After that, there was a computer aptitude test and another aptitude test that felt like an SAT or IQ test.
