I had to give a short presentation about my PhD research, and then they asked questions about it. It was not too bad, although they did seem a bit impatient and wanted to ask questions all the time, even after I told them that the question would be answered in a later slide.

Had an online interview first with HR. They asked me about my university studies, what I focused on most, and my reasons for wanting to work in Japan. Then, I had a second interview in person where they asked those same questions again, plus asked about an instance where I worked as part of a team.

The hiring process was pretty smooth, though it took a few weeks to schedule the initial interview after I was first contacted. Following the interview, there were additional waiting periods of several weeks for updates and then the offer. The interview itself was about an hour long. I primarily discussed my past experience and research. They then provided details about the project and we talked about potential research areas. There weren't any technical questions beyond discussions related to my research. Overall, the process was smooth and not too stressful.

The interview will focus on your past research and your ability to do future research at MERL. You'll have about 15 minutes to present your PhD work, followed by questions from the interviewer. They'll also inquire about your coding skills for the upcoming project.
