Students applied for positions they were interested in, and the employer chose who to move forward with. Those selected were invited to a recruitment weekend for interviews. Each interview was 30 minutes long, with 20 minutes for the interview itself and 10 minutes for questions. It was a formal process, and there was an hour break for a lunch with the professional staff who were interviewing candidates. Overall, it was a positive interview day.

So I went to this Graduate Recruitment Weekend thing, and I had interviews with 5 different supervisors. The questions were pretty standard, but each supervisor also had questions specific to their department. It was mostly stuff like, 'tell us about yourself,' and 'why are you choosing to come to MSU and work as a graduate assistant?' The cool thing about this process is that you rank the assistantships you're interested in, and then the supervisors get together and rank you too. They try to match you with the supervisor who wanted you the most, based on the assistantship you want the most. I picked the Admissions office, and they picked me. I got an offer about 2 weeks after the weekend.
