First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Minneapolis Park & Recreation Board.
Team Lead
So after I applied, I got an email to set up an interview. It was a Zoom call, about 30 minutes long. They wanted me to introduce myself and then asked a few scenario-based questions.
- What's your approach when a parent comes to you upset about their child's experience at camp?
Youth Program Specialist
I applied online. About a month and a half later, I got an email for an interview/oral exam. It was a Zoom panel with 4 people. I was sent set questions 15 minutes before and couldn't ask anything. Two weeks later, I got an email to move on. The next interview was in person with two people. I was given questions on arrival but could ask questions and converse this time.
- Can you share your experience working with diverse youth?
Water Resources Technician
After submitting my application and supplemental questions, I got an invite for an "oral exam." I was alone in a room and given 8 questions to study and take notes on for 15 minutes. Then, I had to present my answers to three employees from the MPRB. They could only read the questions and couldn't give feedback or ask follow-ups. It felt really awkward and unnatural. The questions were mostly about past experiences and behavior, with very little technical stuff.
- Tell me about a situation in the field where things didn't go as planned and explain how you dealt with it.
Project Manager
To get to the interview stage, you had to turn in a cover letter, résumé, and portfolio. After that, HR gave you a telephone screening interview. Then there was an in person panel interview where they asked 4-5 questions. Make sure to read the job description really well and get ready to talk about everything they listed. Also, like at most places, it's a good idea to try and talk to someone who already works there.
- Could you share your background and how it connects to this role?
- What is your experience with public engagement?
