I went through a two round interview process. Before the second round, they asked if I would be willing to complete a writing assessment and proofing test. I said yes. During the second round, they asked if I could provide relevant proposal/writing experience from past jobs. I told them I couldn't because my past jobs don't allow their proposals to be circulated outside their businesses. They ended the call quickly and sent a rejection email. I was never asked to complete the assignment.

I interviewed with the hiring manager and then the CD. Both interviews went well and I was excited about the company and the opportunity. I was asked to do a skills assessment which was a take-home exercise. It involved concept and art direction for an ad campaign based on a brief with a 5-day turnaround. I spent a lot of time on it. After I submitted it, I only received confirmation of receipt. I reached out several weeks later to ask about my candidacy but heard nothing back. Normally I would not do spec work for a job but I really liked the company and the people I met so I decided to do it this time. If I had read any reviews about their process and lack of transparency, I would have declined. I hope this helps the next person.

This company first emailed me requesting writing samples. After the hiring manager reviewed my work, the next step was an assessment. I was given 24 hours to complete an unpaid assignment that involved three writing exercises and proofreading a 3-page article. The exercises required me to write 7 paragraphs of story pitches, headlines, a travel guide, etc., which took many hours of research and writing. I submitted the assignment within the 24-hour timeframe. A week later, I received a generic response stating I lacked attention to detail and they were not moving forward, without even a phone call. So sad they gave me 24 hours but took a week to respond.

Applied on Indeed and they replied quickly to set up a phone screen. Made it through that round and to a Zoom interview. Both people I spoke with were pleasant and answered my questions. They seemed to really love the company. Only note: I thought they had ghosted me because the interview was in mid-July. I finally got a rejection email on Oct. 9th. I appreciate that the hiring process can take a while. Glad I heard anything.
