It was a really great experience! I had to demonstrate my skills and knowledge of standard practices. I submitted some of my code samples, shared links to my best projects, and my GitHub profile.

Technical Presentation

I applied via Angel List and was invited for a video interview a few days later. The video interview would take place via Hireflix, because "asynchronous communication" was "huge" for a remote company. Hireflix lets recruiters upload question videos. As an applicant, you get to start the so-called interview and you can indicate when you are done answering a question and the next question can be started, but you have no further control over the playback. So no pause, no re-play. Each question video from Microverse was done by a different team member. The first video starts off with the interviewer with their backs to the camera, then swirling around to "shoot" the question at you... Almost without exception, the sound quality on all of these videos was beyond poor. Most questions were barely audible. And that is with noise-cancelling headphones on, so I would not be distracted by any sounds in my own environment. The entire process is based on the flawed idea that interviews are a one-way street, meant solely to provide information to the recruiter, not to candidate. The process design and the poor execution on the side of the company, however, do speak volumes about corporate culture and made this a waste of time.

Technical Behavioral Coding Presentation

Applied and sent my resume to Microverse, they liked my code reviewing experience and how I give feedback. Got an email from a recruiter, we chatted on the phone about my background, seemed like a good fit. Then I got a coding challenge to review some code and give feedback, which I did. After that, I had a virtual tech interview with two senior devs, they asked about my code review process, handling conflicts, and languages I know. Then, a behavioral interview to see if I'd fit in, talking about communication, teamwork, and tough situations. They also had me do a code review simulation live, and I did a good job explaining my thoughts. The final interview was with the team lead and HR, discussing team stuff and my potential contributions. They checked my references, and my old colleagues said good things. Finally, they gave me an offer which I accepted!

Behavioral Other

The interview was done via Hireflix, which was surprisingly quite good and wasn't a problem. What really impressed me, even though I didn't get the job, was that they took the time to send me a personalised video reply as to why they didn't give me an offer. This is way more than most companies do.
