First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Metromile.
Software Engineer
It was a pretty straightforward interview process. The interviewers were quite engaged and helpful. There were 3 technical interviews, and then a round with the manager. The questions were similar to LeetCode medium problems. I received a verbal offer, but the recruiter mentioned the written offer would take about a week to finalize. He stayed in touch but kept pushing back the date for the written offer. After 3 weeks, I still hadn't heard anything. I've since moved on because of this unprofessional behavior. They never did send a final offer. This company was recently bought by another insurance company.
- A question involving strings.
- A question about designing a distributed system.
Staff Big Data Engineer
I applied via referral and the recruiter got back quickly to chat about the role and check my career goals to make sure it was a good fit. Then, I had a 45-min technical phone screen where we talked about my experience for about 15-20 mins and I did a medium-hard leetcode question. After that, I was set up for the virtual on-site, and the recruiter was super helpful in letting me pick two time slots. The on-site panel included 2 coding interviews, 1 systems design round, 1 database design round, 1 big data core round, and a couple of behavioral rounds. Everyone on the panel was really patient and asked clear, consistent questions, focusing more on helping me succeed than grilling me.
- How would you find the median from a data stream?
- How do you approach string balancing?
- Can you explain Kafka core concepts?
Product Manager
This was a long interview process, and it felt like they figured out the structure as we went along. I went through a bunch of rounds, talking to a bunch of different people, even some higher-ups. In the end, they didn't offer me the job and just gave me a generic 'skill set wasn't a fit' reason, no real feedback. I emailed the hiring managers to ask for more details, but they just ignored me. It was disappointing because it seemed like a good interview, and most of the interviewers said nice things, but the way they handled the feedback afterwards left a bad impression.
- Can you tell me about your previous experiences?
- What are some examples of your past work and achievements you can share?
- Walk me through a situation where you encountered a challenge in product management and how you resolved it.
Data Scientist
I applied through a referral and heard back from a Technical Recruiter within 4-5 days to set up an initial hr screening for the following week. The recruiter started by talking about the company and the role, then asked me basic questions about my resume, salary expectations, and where I'd like to work. They also explained what would happen next. After that, I had another screening with a DS Manager. This part had two sections: first, I had to talk about my past work in DS, and second, there was a coding challenge on Coderpad. The coding part involved a question about product sense and experiment design for A/B testing, followed by two SQL questions (one easy, one medium). Finally, I had a Python coding test where I needed to implement a basic ML algorithm from scratch using the provided data, without any libraries. The hiring manager then answered some of my questions. It was a good experience overall, though I didn't get the job because I wasn't well-prepared for the test.
- Can you discuss your past work experience in Data Science?
- What are your thoughts on experiment design and A/B testing?
- Here are some SQL problems for you to solve.
