I did a test task first, and then got an interview. The interview was for the Tokyo office and done over Skype. Some QA engineers and an interpreter were there, which was super helpful since my Japanese isn't perfect. They were all really nice and positive. They asked me about my past work, like what I do every day, and also about any problems or things I thought could be better with their app. I had to stop the process later on, but I had a really good feeling about it.

This was the worst interview experience. You absolutely must know Japanese to work here. For a QA role, communication is key, and I can't imagine how someone would manage at Mercari without it. Don't anticipate getting clear answers to your questions during the interview.

I applied for the job and heard back from a recruiter within two days. She set up a video call with the hiring manager, which lasted about 30-45 minutes. After that, the recruiter called to invite me for an in-person interview. The face-to-face part went really well, and I didn't feel any pressure. The questions seemed fair for my skillset. I met with three people who were all very thoughtful and offered me water and anything else I might need. A couple of days later, I got the offer from the recruiter and the hiring manager.
