First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Mellon Foundation.
Administrative Assistant
The interview was conducted via Zoom. It was challenging to communicate with two interviewers in a large conference room through Zoom. The process was efficient, and they informed me shortly after that I was not selected.
- Can you describe your relevant experience?
Assistant
About a week after applying, I got a call from a recruiter. We scheduled a phone screening with another HR person, which was basic and pleasant. Then, I was invited for a second round which had three parts: an in-person meeting with the HR rep, a meeting with the hiring managers, and a skills test. The hiring managers seemed disengaged and critical, maybe interview burnout. The skills test was a 30-minute task involving proofreading a letter and reconciling a budget. I followed up with the recruiter the next day and got contact info for the people I met. However, I received a letter in the mail the day after the interview saying they weren't moving forward. It felt like a harsh way to reject me; I would have preferred to just hear back the next day instead of sending thank-you notes to people who had already made up their minds.
- Can you tell me about a funded project that you found particularly noteworthy?
Manager
I was contacted by Mellon for a role that seemed like a good match, and I had an initial recruiter interview that went well. However, the recruitment process felt disorganized, unclear, and didn't align with the Foundation's stated humanistic values. A scheduled interview was canceled by the recruiter and wasn't rescheduled until I followed up. After the interview, I sent a thank-you note and later a professional follow-up, but received no response to either. The process ended with an automated rejection email, without any direct communication or closure. The rejection itself isn't the problem; it's that for an organization focused on humanities and committed to thoughtful, relational work, the candidate experience was impersonal and dismissive. Candidates were treated like administrative tasks instead of people who invested time and effort. I believe it would have gone differently if I had the chance to talk with senior leadership, who could have assessed both skills and personality fit. Mellon's mission and work are compelling, but the hiring process didn't show the same level of care, respect, or humanity. My advice to management is that recruiting should reflect institutional values. Basic communication, follow-through, and accountability would greatly improve the candidate experience and better align hiring with the Foundation's public image. My advice to candidates is not to get too invested early on, as the reality didn't match my expectations and values.
- Why are you interested in working for Mellon?
Program Assistant
Working for this organization was something I really wanted to do, but the recruiting process was a mess. After I applied, I was set up for an initial screening interview with a recruiter who was contracted. It was a bit tricky to get the first interview scheduled because the dates were mixed up and I had to fix them, but the interview itself went well. I was told I'd hear back from the Foundation within two months about the next steps. When those two months passed, I got a voicemail from the recruiter asking to set up another interview with the team and gave me some date/time options. I tried to call back right away, but the Foundation's reception couldn't connect me to HR and told me to just email instead. The recruiter never replied to my email, and then I got an automated rejection email on the same thread two weeks later.
- Can you describe a time you faced a challenge in a past job and how you handled it?
