A recruiter reached out on LinkedIn and I had an initial chat with them. Then, I talked to the Director of Design, who asked me more detailed questions about my background and told me more about the job. The next step was a case study where I presented my work to the Director of Design and two Product Designers. After that, I had a chat with a Product Manager and a Marketing Copywriter to see if I was a good fit for the team culture. Finally, I had one last call with the Director of Design and the head of recruiting to clear up any last questions and talk about benefits.

Coding

A recruiter will send you a coding challenge before reviewing your credentials. In my case, I successfully completed the challenge but never heard back from the recruiter even after following up. My advice for interested candidates is to never do a code challenge for a company before at least having an intro call. Having the opportunity to communicate with the recruiter and ask questions before spending time completing an assignment is essential since otherwise you're just wasting candidates time. From a hiring perspective this is also advantageous since many engineers refuse to interview with companies that initialize their process with an assignment or leet code type problem.

Behavioral Case Presentation

So, the interview for the Employer Branding job was pretty cool, a good mix of tough and fun. It kicked off with a quick chat with HR, then I dove into deep talks with the marketing and HR folks about past campaigns and plans. I also had to do a quick case study, which was a good test of my creative and problem-solving chops. All in all, it felt really well put together, made me think hard, showed off what I can do, and gave me a solid feel for the company vibe and what they're looking for.

Behavioral Other

I applied on Indeed and about a week later, a recruiter contacted me to set up an interview with the hiring manager. This interview was a video call. The hiring manager didn't seem interested from the start and it made me feel awkward, so I was glad it was a video chat rather than in person. I felt like he had a specific image in mind for the front desk role, wanting someone who was the 'face of the location,' and I didn't think that was me.
