Digital Strategist
I was reached out to by a recruiter about two potential roles, "Digital Strategist" and "PPC Specialist," and I agreed to a preliminary phone chat. The first phone interview involved a discussion with a woman about the various open positions, and she then set up a subsequent call with another manager. In that second call, they brought up the multiple roles again. When I pressed on which role was most critical for Mediagistic's growth, they just said "all," and I really couldn't get a clear picture of what they were actually seeking from me during the discussion. Post-second interview, the recruiter contacted me back, expressing interest but also uncertainty about my "technical" skills. They proposed a Skype interview to gauge my suitability, which I accepted. I made a mental note to prep my technical skills to showcase my expertise. The Skype interview featured about 4 or 5 people at a conference table, with me on video. They asked several open-ended questions, but I still lacked a solid understanding of the position. I started detailing some technical aspects of my SEO experience to demonstrate my technical side, but was quickly cut off. I was told that such tasks are delegated to others and they wanted someone focused on overall strategy. By the end of this meeting, I was still very much in the dark about the specific role they were hiring for, or even what it entailed. What exactly is the "overall strategy"? Would I be developing campaigns? Managing accounts? Which parts would be handed off? None of these details were clarified. Since I hadn't been able to get details earlier, I assumed they were keeping the specifics under wraps until an offer. They seemed like nice, personable people otherwise, but their hiring process felt disorganized. It seemed like they weren't entirely sure of their own requirements, which I felt put me at a disadvantage due to the lack of clarity.
- Out of the positions available, which do you feel you'd be a good fit for?
Accounting Manager
It was a pretty standard accounting manager role, though it doesn't have any direct reports. They're looking for someone who is a CPA or on the CPA track. The manager position has been elevated from a senior role. They mentioned a discretionary bonus at the management level, and they really want someone who is 100% in the office and participates in things like office parties, which they call employee enrichment/appreciation. You can tell they have a very specific ideal candidate in mind, possibly someone who prefers a traditional waterfall management style. The feedback was pretty immediate during the interview.
- What are your career aspirations for the next five years?
- How do you envision yourself contributing to our organization?
- What are your thoughts on participating in office social events and fostering a positive office environment?
Account Manager
The whole process was really long, taking over 3 months from start to finish before I got the offer. I had an onsite interview with the hiring manager, then went back for interviews with the direct manager and another manager. It took a few weeks for any updates, and I almost gave up on the company. But something about the job kept me going. I followed up a few times by email and phone. Eventually, I got the green light and came in to interview with the VP. A few days later, they called with the offer. The initial offer was about $10k less than I was hoping for. We negotiated a bit, and they increased it by about $4k.
- Can you discuss your past roles as listed on your resume?
- What personal qualities do you possess that align with the requirements of this role?
Digital Strategy Manager
I started with a one-on-one with the team manager, which was good. Then, I had a call with the whole team. After that, I did a face-to-face meeting with a director and the team, in a group setting. The interview felt like a conversation about the industry and my experiences, if you're a good fit.
- What do you foresee as the future of SEO over the next five years?
