First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Media Matters for America.
Researcher
I interviewed with MMFA late last year and was ghosted after two interviews which were a full month apart. I followed up with the interviewer three times and never received a response. I have a graduate degree and years of experience in research, and I guess I still wasn't worth responding to. It was completely disrespectful and a waste of my time, I would caution anyone who is applying to MMFA.
- Can you describe your research experience?
- What is your experience with social media?
Researcher
I went through multiple phone and in-person interviews with increasingly senior folks at Media Matters over several months for different roles. They were really responsive, getting back within a few days after each application, but it felt a bit repetitive. For two of the jobs, I had to do a writing test. Media Matters seemed to really care about progressive bona fides and strong policy convictions.
- How often do you go to MediaMatters.org?
- Which progressive policies are most important to you and why?
- How has Media Matters addressed the issue you mentioned?
Issue Researcher
I found the job opening for an Issue Researcher on the MMFA website and applied via email. Within three days, an assistant reached out asking about my interest in an interview. I confirmed, and we scheduled a face-to-face meeting with an issue director for the following week. The interview lasted about an hour, discussing the role and my background. They also mentioned the process involves this initial chat, a timed writing test for skills assessment, and a final interview before a decision. I sent a thank-you note the next day. A week later, the assistant emailed to say I wasn't selected.
- What are you reading right now for fun?
- Where do you usually get your news from?
- Describe a time you encountered misinformation and how you would handle it.
Communications Assistant
I was told I was a compelling candidate for this role and invited to interview. The process consisted of an initial interview, a lengthy three part assignment, a second interview, and finally, a third interview. I was told the next step would be reference checks, should they choose to go forward with my candidacy. However, I was ghosted immediately after my final interview. I followed up several times and was ignored, despite having made it significantly far in the interview process.
- How does your past experience relate to the requirements of this position?
