First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at McMaster-Carr.
Operations Lead
Initial call with a recruiter for what seemed like a vague operations lead position. The conversation didn't offer much clarity, leaving me with more questions than answers. It felt rushed and a bit unwelcoming.
- Can you describe your approach to management?
Supervisor
I was first contacted by HR via LinkedIn. She set up a call to discuss the job and hiring process. At the end of our chat, she surprisingly asked if I wanted to do the first phone interview with her right away. I agreed. It was mainly about my past decisions since high school, like choosing my university, major, activities, and first job. Then, they asked about my preferred interview location, and I picked LA. After that, I was invited for a full-day onsite interview. It began with a tour, observing a customer service call, and chatting with someone in logistics. I later found out these parts weren't graded, but you're expected to share your insights on the departments you visited. Following that, I had four consecutive interviews, including one during lunch. Most were fit questions, and a couple were case studies about their current projects.
- Given that your previous company underwent downsizing, what would you suggest as the optimal approach for a company to maintain a balance between its employee count and fluctuating client numbers?
Operations Manager
The interview process was condensed into a single day, involving several interviews across different departments. It included a tour of the warehouse, finance, and sales departments. Afterwards, I met with managers from these departments to answer their questions.
- As they walk you through a department and explain their processes and systems, be sure to ask clarifying questions.
