First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at McGuireWoods.
Attorney Recruiting Coordinator
So after I applied, the first thing was a quick 15-20 minute call with a recruiter. After that, they invited me to come to their office downtown for an in-person interview, and they also gave me a tour. Everyone I talked to was really nice and communicated well. The whole process was pretty straightforward and quick.
- Can you tell me about your experience with event planning and management?
- How would your event planning experience be applicable to the events you would plan for law school students in this role?
Human Resources Coordinator
The first three interviews went really well and I thought I could see myself working here. But then, after those three rounds, they told me I was the only person they were considering. They said they wanted to look at other people though, but keep me in the running. It honestly felt like they were just waiting to see if someone more qualified came along, and keeping me hanging in case no one else applied. This whole thing dragged on for two months, and by then I had already gotten another job offer.
- What makes you want to work in a law firm setting?
Secretarial Assistant
The interview process felt like too many cooks. You go through a lot of pre-screening and testing. Then you meet the main people who decide your fate, and if you pass, you meet people who aren't HR professionals and are judging you with all the insecurities of the average hater. It feels unfair, uncomfortable, and highly prejudicial. Apparently, the work environment is unhealthy because it hires those types of people.
- What are your thoughts on average interview questions?
- How do you feel about odd questions from peers who seem intimidated by competition and intelligence?
Paralegal
I had a phone call with the Paralegal Manager who wanted to know my motivations for seeking a new role and what I could bring to the position. They were keen to understand my drive and future aspirations, looking for indications of a strong work ethic and self-initiative. About a week later, I was invited for an in-person interview at their office with the attorneys. It required two separate visits because not all the attorneys were available on the same day, which was a bit inconvenient. Each visit involved meeting with two attorneys in a conference room. The entire process spanned roughly a month.
- What makes you want to join our firm?
- What's prompting your job search?
- Can you outline your present duties?
