Hostess
The interview process was straightforward and I received a call back within two weeks. My previous role involved starting as a busser and progressing to also handle hosting duties. However, I would not choose to work there again because of the insufficient number of hours offered.
- What makes you want to be employed at this establishment?
Cocktail Server
So I talked to the Front of the House Manager about my schedule and experience. Since my friend referred me, they really wanted to know why I was interested in working there and my availability. The manager was super nice. I started training pretty much right away, within a week. They do make you take a test on the food, drinks, and policies before you wrap up training. You're on probation and not officially hired until you pass it. The test is pretty detailed, and you gotta know everything they covered in training before they'll officially hire you.
- Tell me about your previous experience.
- What makes you want to be a part of the McCormick and Schmicks team?
- What is your availability like?
Server
I initially applied by giving my resume to the lead host. The hosts mentioned that applicants who present themselves well, in terms of dress and demeanor upon greeting, get their resumes prioritized. The first step was a phone interview where I was asked about my previous employment, what I enjoyed about my last role, and my career aspirations with McCormick and Schmicks. If the initial conversation went well and I made a good impression, I'd be invited for a second, in-person interview with at least two managers and the head chef, depending on the number of managers available. Passing this stage pretty much guarantees an offer. During these interviews, topics covered included wine and liquor knowledge, seating procedures, workflow management, prior experience, and understanding of health and sanitation regulations, as well as honesty. They also inquired about my knowledge of fish species, as knowing more means less training for them, and any liquor expertise is a bonus given their full bar.
- Can you list wine varietals you're familiar with, and elaborate on two specific ones?
- Could you describe your understanding of various wine types, detailing two of them?
- What wine varietals do you know, and can you provide detailed descriptions for two of them?
Food Server
I applied online and got a call back a few days later. Then I met with the GM and they asked me a bunch of questions about the job. I got hired right there. It helps to know about white and red wine, sales, and serving. You gotta have drive and personality, and know stuff about Mccormicks and Landrys. Remember it's about them, not you.
- Can you tell me about your previous experience?
- What experience do you have in sales?
- What experience do you have in serving?
