First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at McConnell Dowell.
Commercial Manager
Graduate Engineer
It was a two step process - first, an online assessment to check my cognitive ability and emotional intelligence. Then, a virtual interview with the HR rep and hiring manager. The online assessment was pretty standard, with math problems and some scenario puzzles. The interview was easy enough, mostly asking about my university degree and how I can adapt to the fast-paced nature of construction projects.
- What makes you want to join this company?
- Can you tell me about your degree from university?
- How do you handle the fast-paced nature of construction projects?
Project Engineer
The interview was in-person and arranged with a week's notice. I was supposed to be interviewed by the Construction Manager and the Structures Manager. However, the Construction Manager didn't show up and offered no explanation, even though they could have joined via Teams. The Structures Manager, who conducted the interview, didn't even check why the other manager was absent and just "apologized" for them. They didn't show an org chart to explain where the role fit in or present any drawings of the work's scope. The questions were very generic and lacked specific details related to the role. At the end, I was told a second interview would happen, but the next day I got an email saying they weren't moving forward with my application.
- Can you share instances of problems you've resolved in past roles?
- Could you provide examples of how you've managed issues with staff members?
- What are your strategies for handling or resolving staff-related problems?
Sustainability Advisor
The hiring process was pretty seamless. I had one phone interview and then another one over Teams. The Teams connection was solid. They really took their time to ask about my background and work history. Overall, it was a good process, though finalizing the contract took a bit longer because of all the paperwork.
- Can you share details about your professional background?
- Describe your experience in managing both internal and external stakeholders.
