Started with an online application and a phone call, then an office interview. Got a look at what the actual work will be like with some redacted files. This place has offices in 8 states, but the reviews for other spots don't really match what's going on in Portland. Some bad reviews from last year mentioned managers who aren't even here anymore. You're basically colleagues with the staff and attorneys. They've got a relaxed dress code and you can listen to music, but don't confuse that with actually getting a lot of high-quality work done in an 8-hour day. This law firm is all about growing and making money, and the staff doesn't make a fortune. On the plus side, they give you a $100 monthly transit pass at this office, and lunch shows up randomly. The kitchen is pretty good. You might get gift cards for coffee, sandwiches, or the Apple Store out of the blue. There's a decent performance bonus for everyone, including staff. The Portland office has a good PTO policy, and you can work remotely sometimes after 90 days. The tech is really good, with full-time support, and they offer tutorials and paid training. It's a ton of simple procedures, like following a checklist – 95% of the job is just clicking the right thing. Things in the Mediation Department seem to get sorted out without any real issues.

I found a paralegal job posting on Craig's List and applied from my home on Bainbridge Island. Since I'm an attorney, I made sure to highlight in my cover letter and interview how my law license would be beneficial for tasks like signing pleadings and appearing in court. The day after the interview, they called to see if I'd be interested in an attorney role. I had one more meeting with the managing attorney, and then I was hired as an attorney.
