First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Matthews Asia.
Investment Writer
I was interviewed by just the marketing manager. It felt like a pretty challenging interview. The manager was looking for someone who had a good mix of skills, like video and other things, not just writing. I kind of realized pretty early on that I might not have all the skills they were looking for. The interviewer was very professional, and we didn't really click. But I don't have any issues with how the interview went or the questions that were asked.
- Could you share some of your past work experience that makes you a good fit for this role?
- What experience do you have in video production?
- Besides writing, what other skills do you have that are relevant to this position?
Corporate Counsel
The interviews themselves were fine, and the people I met seemed pleasant enough, but their in-house recruiters were terrible. Their communication was really unprofessional, and they struggled to schedule interviews. I wouldn't hear back for several days after suggesting various times, and then suddenly they'd send an interview schedule late in the afternoon for an interview unexpectedly early the next morning. To top it off, their rejection email was frankly insulting, stating they decided to move forward with a qualified candidate. After going through two interview rounds, one lasting over 4 hours, I have to wonder what exactly I was doing there if I wasn't qualified.
- Can you share some details about your background and past experiences?
Associate
Had a phone screen that was just a list of yes-no questions. Then, I had an on-site with a bunch of friendly chats with people. The hiring manager was super nice and said I was too qualified and would probably get bored.

Analyst
It was multiple rounds. I spoke with the hiring manager, dept head, and a couple of people from the culture committee. It was a bit strange that I didn't get to meet the person I'd be working with directly. Two of the four interviews were pretty professional and informative.
- What are some of your favorite types of cuisines, as a way to assess cultural fit?
