Mathematica Associate Interview Questions
& Process

Mathematica emailed me about a month after I applied to set up a phone interview. It was with one person and lasted about 30 minutes. It was surprising because it didn't have many typical questions like about goals, working style, or specific skills. Instead, they mostly wanted to hear about me and my interests. The manager also talked a lot about the company, the job, and the team. When I asked about next steps, they said there were no more interviews after the phone one, just phone interviews. But, about a week or two later, I got another email about a second-round, in-person interview that would be over 4 hours long and involve 10 people. The in-person part was okay. It's a lot for a non-managerial role, though. Everyone was really nice and asked about my goals and skills, and also tried to get a feel for my personality. The manager who did the phone call told me early on that they were considering me for a more senior role because of my background, which sounded good, but about a week and a half after that, I got an email saying I wasn't chosen.

The interview process started with a 40-minute phone call, covering general questions like 'why Mathematica?', resume walk-through, and strengths/weaknesses. The interviewer seemed to follow a script. Two weeks later, a second one-hour phone interview occurred, similar to the first but including HR-related topics such as salary expectations. After HR feedback, an in-person interview was scheduled, with the company covering travel expenses. This final stage involved an all-day session (9 am to 3 pm) with nine individuals, mostly one-on-one meetings, but two were with pairs of employees. Most interviewers were receptive, though a few were intense and aggressive, making it feel like an exam. Despite this, the overall experience felt positive. Although HR was communicative, the decision took over a month. Ultimately, I was informed they wanted to hire me but couldn't due to a lack of work, though they'd consider me in the future.

I sent in my application and heard back after a few weeks about a phone interview. They started by asking me some general questions about myself and why I was interested in the company. Then, they went on to explain more about the company and what the role would involve. About a week after that, I was invited for a second interview at their office. It went really well! Everyone I met was super friendly and genuinely seemed interested in learning about me and talking through my past experiences. Just be ready for a pretty long day with several interviews back-to-back.
