& Process

The interview process had 5 rounds. The first was an HR interview lasting 45 minutes. The second round was a SQL coding test, taking 3 to 4 hours. The third round was with the hiring manager and lasted 1 hour. The fourth round was a case study that took a week to complete. The fifth round was a final presentation. After I finished the case study, they ghosted me, saying they shut off the position, which wasted almost a month and a half of my time going through the tedious interview process.

So I applied for a Policy Team role, and I went through four rounds. I think there was a final round that I didn't quite make it to. The last round I did, they gave me a prompt beforehand about a complex policy or safety issue, and I had to present it to a panel. It was pretty stressful getting ready for it, but the people on the panel were really nice and it wasn't too tough. It took a while, like weeks, to hear back that I didn't get it, but they gave me good feedback and suggested I reapply for a more junior role. The whole experience felt pretty personal and well-managed.

I really appreciated the recruiter, Charles, that reached out to me initially about a potential role at Match. He was very communicative about steps and the interview process. He was honestly the best part about the whole experience. I went through the first initial phone call with him, the second round was an hour Zoom call with the HM, and the third round was a portfolio presentation with the team as well as a whiteboard challenge with the team leads. I'm not going to lie, I stressed about the presentation and the whiteboard challenge (they were back to back for three hours) and I invested A LOT of time practicing for almost a week and them responding that I would not move forward to the next round was really disappointing. The team was also not as engaging as I expected them to be which came off really standoffish, in my personal opinion. I would caution if you're not up for that much work or you don't have time to prepare, don't move forward with the process!

The interview process started with a Hackerrank assessment that included multiple-choice questions about OOP concepts and two coding challenges, one of which was graph-based. I found the assessment interesting and enjoyable. This was followed by a video interview where I spoke with a senior engineer about my past experiences and the nature of work at Match. The final stage was an onsite workday simulation with the team. This was a really engaging part of the process, giving me a chance to interact with other candidates and current Match employees, and to get a feel for the office's work culture. Unfortunately, about a month after the interviews, we were informed that the company had shifted its business focus, leading to the cancellation of the Co-Op program, which was disappointing.
