First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at MasTec Advanced Technologies.
Technician
I got a phone call for an interview that was about 15-30 minutes long. They asked some basic questions. Later that day, I got an email with a job offer and info on how to do the new hire paperwork. The next day, FedEx sent me paperwork and instructions for a drug test. After I finished everything, I started training two weeks later. It was a really fast and easy process. I liked that the interview and hiring stuff were all done over the phone and email.
- Tell me about a time you had to handle a difficult customer. What did you do and what happened in the end.
Resource Coordinator
I applied for the Senior Resource Coordinator role and a recruiter called me about a week later. We scheduled a 30-minute phone screening. After that, I had an in-person interview with an Operations Analyst and the Hiring Director. The first interview was with a guy who asked about my Excel skills, specifically pivot tables. He made a strange comment about it just being a Coordinator role and those skills not being necessary, which I found a bit dismissive. The interview with the Director went much better. The entire interview process took a little over an hour. The hiring manager explained the next steps and said they'd let the recruiter know if they were moving forward with me or someone else. I emailed the recruiter to see if the position was still open but haven't heard back in almost two weeks. I thought the whole experience was unprofessional, especially not getting any follow-up. Even if the job was filled or closed, it would be good to let candidates know. It feels like a waste of time when you don't hear back. Hopefully, other candidates have a better experience.
- Can you tell me about your Excel skills?
- What's your experience in Resource Management?
- Describe a situation where you had to present findings based on analytical data.
Security Technician
The hiring process took about a month. The interview itself seemed okay, but what they said about pay wasn't totally true. The training was pretty bad. The people training you get paid per job, so they don't get paid for training time. They rushed through my training because they didn't want to miss out on other jobs. I basically watched for a week and then started helping with devices, but I barely got any hands-on training with the iPad. When I tried talking to my security manager about it, he ghosted me for a week, and then I found out he had left the company. I told my new supervisor about the issue, and he said I'd had enough time to learn the iPad. I explained I was learning based on his training, but I couldn't tell him how to train me. They told me it was my responsibility to make them train me properly, but if I don't know what I need to know, how can I tell them how to train me? They claimed they'd help with any issues or complaints, but that was a lie. When I complained about my training, they complained about me complaining. They said I was just making excuses, which was wild because if I didn't want to learn, I wouldn't have come to them asking for help with the iPad after not getting it in the field. I ended up quitting after hearing them discuss other people's problems, and I stopped feeling comfortable asking for help.
- Would you be open to working 12 to 15 hours per day for 6 days a week?
Administrative Assistant
The interview started with a phone call with a recruiter from Colorado. She said it was a pre-screening and she'd pass my answers to the HR department at the company's main location. If they liked my responses, they'd invite me for an onsite interview. The interview felt rushed, with awkward pauses while she typed out my answers to her questions. Some questions were simple yes/no or scale of 1-10, while others about Microsoft Office were long and hard to understand.
- How good are you with Excel, on a scale of 1 to 10?
- Tell me about the last time you used PowerPoint and who your audience was.
- Are you able to work remotely?
