Marist College Interview Questions
& Process

This was one long interview, and the people were incredibly nice. They went over my resume and asked about my past work. The questions were pretty standard for this kind of role. It seemed like a great team of people who are supportive and work hard.

The interview was unusually short, lasting only a few hours compared to typical academic interviews. It included meetings with the Dean and faculty, a lunch that was also the presentation room, a research presentation, a debrief, and a quick campus tour. It was odd because there were no student interactions or teaching demos. The lunch was buffet-style, catered by the college, held in the presentation room. Some faculty members were quite rude during the presentation, interrupting often, and one even slept so deeply that snoring was audible. The overall impression was that it was a low-budget event compared to other universities.

The interview process was straightforward. Initially, I spoke with a few individuals who seemed disengaged. The final interview was with the department director, who was completely uninterested and unresponsive, leaving long silences if I didn't initiate questions. It felt like a waste of time, especially after learning they hired someone with no higher education background, only a few months of experience in the field, and no master's degree. This candidate was an alumni, suggesting that being an alumni might be more important than having a master's degree and 5+ years of experience, which I have. This points to unethical hiring practices and a disservice to the students.

It was a group interview with the director, middle school coordinator, admin, and a couple of other college staff. Everyone was friendly and personable. I thought the interview went very well. I was asked if offered the position would I accept and I said yes. I was also asked to send references. After sending references, I did not hear back for two weeks and then received an email stating the position has been filled. I had another job opportunity in the works so did not proactively reach out for an update, but it was very strange as they seemed to want to offer me the position.
