Underwriting Supervisor
I met with the Manager. The interview was all about my resume experience. We had an open discussion about what the department needs. I was there for at least 90 minutes. It was a really free-flowing chat where we talked about ideas for improvement.
- Can you tell me about your experience based on your resume?
- What do you think the department needs?
- What are your ideas for improvement?
Statistician
I applied via email to the HR manager, who then forwarded my application to the recruiter. The recruiter reached out for the first round, which took about two weeks to schedule. It was a 1.5-hour phone interview with three people back-to-back. One was a statistician who asked technical questions about basic statistics knowledge, model assumptions, and GLM. The other two were managers who inquired about my experience with statistical modeling, internships, and handling big data challenges. It felt pretty standard; they seemed to be taking notes as I spoke.
- Could you explain the assumptions of Linear Regression and what happens if the variance is not constant?
- What approaches would you take to handle variables that are highly correlated or to address missing values in a dataset?
Sales Agent
The interview process began with a phone call from the recruiter. They described the position, duties, and expectations well, giving me a good sense of the role. If it seemed like a good fit, the next step was to meet the sales manager at the branch. This meeting was pleasant, and I was asked a lot of questions to see if I was a self-starter and could manage my time. It's a sales role where you have to find clients, which can be tough ('feast or famine'). I felt the interview went well, and the manager even suggested discussing potential referral sources next time. However, a second interview never happened, which was disappointing as I had my list ready. This job has good potential for someone willing to put in the time to build lead sources.
- What makes you believe you can be successful in this role?
Statistician
The role is in a department called predictive analytics, and the ad mentions things like trees and NNs, but it turns out to be a traditional GLM-on-SAS job once you're on-site. If you go in expecting that, it's a pretty standard process. Both the initial phone call and the on-site interview happen in a round-robin format. You'll talk to three interviewers on the phone, and then five or six when you come in person. A lot of it is behavioral, so be ready to discuss past projects using the "tell me about a time you..." method. The interviewers are nice and will share the good and bad points about working at the company. The technical questions weren't super tough, focusing more on concepts like the Gauss-Markov theorem and ANOVA specifics, rather than actual predictive modeling questions.
- Could you complete an ANOVA table where some values were missing?
