First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Manitowoc.
Intern
So first I sent my CV, and after they looked at it, they called me for an in-person interview. I met with HR and the head of the department. After the interview, HR called me back to let me know they accepted my application.
- Can you introduce yourself?
- Tell me about your professional background.

Design Engineer
So basically there was this quick phone screen with HR from Port Washington to get me set up for an in-person interview in Manitowoc. Then I had this interview in Manitowoc with five people from the engineering team. HR was kinda difficult about my schedule for the in-person, saying it had to be before the holidays since everyone would be gone in December, which is kinda a red flag. Each engineer got about 35 minutes to interview me in their own offices. It was a really long process because I had to tell the same story five times and many questions were repeated by each engineer. The building is mostly used by Alliance Laundry Systems now, and the engineering offices seem a bit outdated, not keeping up with current industry tech, especially since they don't know much about 3D printing which is crazy for 2023. There's no HR at the Manitowoc location, they're all in Port Washington. At one point, they asked about my 'job hopping,' which was weird because my jobs have all been for about 1.5-2.5 years, which is normal these days. I was also told to bring completed drug testing paperwork to be collected right after the interview, but there was no HR there or anyone who mentioned collecting it.
- Have you worked with FEA before?
- What's your background with mechanical structures?
- Do you have any background in hydraulic control systems?
Software Engineer
I applied about a month ago and heard back from an HR rep who asked about my skills, salary expectations, and if I was willing to move. Then, I had a phone interview with two managers. The first part was a quick check on my knowledge of programming languages and software, some of which weren't even listed in the job description. The second part focused on my job preferences and my potential move to Shady Grove. A week later, they invited me for an onsite interview, and I flew out the next week. HR handled the travel smoothly. The onsite was about 6 hours long with 5 different people. Two interviews were non-technical, focusing on my fit with the company and my ability to explain things simply. Two others were technical, digging into my resume skills and job requirements. The last person showed me around and we chatted casually about the job. Each person I spoke with for 45 minutes, and we had lunch together, which was nice. Everyone was friendly and made me feel comfortable. I followed up with HR about a month after the interview but heard nothing back, so I assume I didn't get the job. Despite not getting an offer, the interview experience itself was really positive.
- Tell me about behavioral questions regarding workplace problems.
- Can you discuss C/C++ programming questions and memory management?
- What about Design Patterns?
Mechanical Engineer
So a recruiter reached out to me about this role, which involves a lot of CAD work and production floor interaction. First, I had a quick 15-20 minute call with the recruiter to go over my background and see if I was a good fit. After that, she requested three references, which I sent over. Then, she called back to set up an interview with the hiring manager. I went in about a week later. The recruiter was there, and the hiring manager brought me and another manager into an office. It was kind of awkward at first, so I kicked things off by talking about myself a bit. They asked a couple of questions, but I ended up doing most of the talking. The vibe changed when one manager started playing on her phone and the other kept yawning. The whole thing only lasted about 20 minutes, even though the room was booked for two hours. I had a feeling it wouldn't lead to an offer. A few days later, the recruiter told me they weren't moving forward because of something about me not wanting hands-on work, which was weird since I said I was interested in production too.
