First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Manchester City Council.
Business Support Officer
The panel were friendly and there were 4 forward questions. They require STAR method answers or you're not considered. They wrote down the answers as you speak, so this might be distracting when focusing on your answers. The outcome was after a week, which is good. The communication and follow up was professional and helpful.
- Can you describe your familiarity with IT packages and your experience using them?
Workplace Adjustment Lead Caseworker
It started with a roleplay assessment, then there was a panel interview where they shared the questions ahead of time. One of the panel members was a senior executive who stepped in, and they were really condescending the whole time. The rest of the panel was fine, though.
- Regarding the Workplace Adjustment Hub, how do you see Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion being especially relevant?
- What do you identify as some of the difficulties large organizations encounter in implementing EDI?
- And what would be your approach to tackling some of these challenges?
Project Officer
So, the whole interview thing took about 2 hours. It started off with a 1-hour test where I had to make a report using some raw data they gave me about childcare services. After that, I met with a panel of 3 people. They hit me with all sorts of questions covering things like budget, managing my time, how I deal with conflict, and figuring out what's most important. I felt like it went pretty well overall, but then one of the panel members called me back later to say I didn't get the job. I asked why, and she said I didn't give enough detail in my answers. Apparently, my answers were correct, but she wanted more in-depth explanations. She did say the report I wrote was good, though. Still, they decided not to move forward with my application.
- Could you share an instance of team conflict and your part in resolving it?
Finance Trainee
I was shortlisted for the first round interview. The interview consisted of three parts: Group assessment, Panel interview and a written task. For the group assessment we were divided into groups of 6 and were given two problems to solve. It lasted around 30 mins. The panel interview was conducted by two team members and behavioural questions were asked. It lasted around 20mins. The interviewers were friendly. For the written task we had to write a memo to the manager base on the financial statement of the previous quarter in 50mins.
- What do you know about the council?
