Technical Recruiter
I got referred by a friend for this first technical recruiter job at Man Crates. The role sounded cool, and I was bummed not to get an offer, but honestly, it's probably for the best considering what they expected from their technical recruiting team. They mentioned they had very few engineering interviewers, and these interviewers were dealing with too many bad technical phone interviews. So, they really needed a recruiter who could help vet engineering candidates better before the technical phone interviews. In the end, they went with a recruiter who had prior coding experience. It sounds like a smart move, and maybe recruiters who code will be the future, but I think I bring other valuable skills, and it just wasn't the right match.
- If you don't have a computer science background, how would you assess a software engineer's quality before they speak with the hiring manager?
Merchandising
The interview process was long and involved, but the people were really nice. I was bummed not to get the job offer, and they told me they "decided to go with another candidate." But then, the job was posted again online the same day. So, it's clear they weren't being straight with me. It would be way more professional and admirable to be upfront and honest instead of misleading candidates, and it makes the company look bad when the misleading is so obvious.
- What team would be necessary to execute these plans?
Customer Champion
The interview process for this role was quite extensive and took a significant amount of time. It started with about an hour-long phone interview. After that, I was given three customer emails to respond to on the same day. Then, I had an in-person interview that lasted over two hours with three different employees. Some of the questions asked were about high-level topics I didn't have experience with, which weren't mentioned in the job description or on my resume. A more relevant part of the interview involved a role-play scenario where I had to handle an "angry customer" situation. Although I was told one person was too busy to interview, another person on the team brought them in anyway, extending the interview time even further, especially since it seemed clear I wouldn't be getting the job after spending so much time. It felt like they valued degrees from fancy universities more than actual experience, and they seemed to be looking for people they could socialize with rather than qualified employees. The office space itself seemed small and uncomfortable, lacking soundproofing for people on calls, and generally not a place I would have enjoyed working.
- I was under the impression this was a customer support management role, but I was asked some advanced questions about CRMs and configurations that were outside my experience and not something I had claimed to know.
Admin Lead
I applied online and sent an email to show my genuine interest. I had about 3 lengthy interviews and had to coordinate to meet in person. After all of this, I was ghosted and received no response to my 2 follow-up emails. It's unprofessional not to even send a quick reply saying they chose someone else. It seems like they're either funded by the number of interviews or doing salary surveys, or they're just unprofessional. Either way, I'd avoid this company.
- In a remote setting, how would you maintain company culture?
