First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Magnolia Bakery.
Cake Decorator
The interview was pretty relaxed. I sat down with the general manager at the bakery and we just talked over some coffee. We went over my past jobs, looked at my resume, and I showed them some examples of my earlier work.
- What hourly wage are you looking for?
General Manager
Started with a 30-minute phone screening. Then they asked for my availability for interviews with senior people. After that, there was an hour-long panel interview with 3 senior members, followed by a 45-minute meeting with the CEO.
- What makes you want to join this company?
Graphic Designer
I was contacted the day before for an interview for the next two days, and I had to be flexible. I gave them my availability, and they chose a time that conflicted with another call I had. I was a few minutes late joining because of that. As soon as I tried to join, I got a rejection email. It felt like they had already decided. They didn't reach out or try to understand. The automatic rejection said I didn't join, which felt pointed. I emailed to apologize for being late and explained I was juggling multiple interviews and schedules. I mentioned seeing the rejection and how poorly it was handled. They replied sarcastically, saying they were glad everything was okay and sorry I couldn't communicate in advance. The whole process felt very transactional and rigid, with no consideration or empathy. They expected flexibility from me but didn't offer it in return. I've had interviewers run late before, and I've always checked in without judgment.
- Were any considerations offered?
Cashier
I applied for the open interviews and just walked in. I filled out an application and then had the interview. It was a really nice and easy interview. They asked standard experience questions and some hypothetical ones. I had to show I was enthusiastic about bakeries and giving great customer service. The interviewer said they wanted to move forward with me right after, and I got the offer email about a week later.
- What's your strategy for handling a difficult customer?
- Can you describe what excellent customer service means to you?
