Magna Power Electronics Interview Questions
& Process

The interview process involved asking questions about my education and relevant experience, followed by a comprehensive tour of the factory. The whole thing lasted about 45-60 minutes and was a friendly chat.

There were two phone calls that were more like technical discussions. The first one was with the CTO, who is also the company founder and currently the Principal Development Engineer, and the HR Director. It lasted about 30 minutes. The second one was about an hour long. They asked about my skills in a descriptive way and also about specific projects I worked on in my career that related to Magna Power developments. It was a really relaxed atmosphere, felt more like a chat than an interview, and they did a good job explaining the job and the company. After that, I had an onsite meeting where I got to tour the plant and chat with other team members face-to-face. Overall, it was a great experience.

The whole process felt really awkward. I've been in my field for almost 10 years. They gave me a task to draw an isometric drawing, which I did. Then, there was a math quiz where I had to do all calculations in my head. I got all but the last question right. The weird part was when I went to jot down some quick math for that last problem, they started ridiculing me and giving me a math lesson. Turns out, the guy giving the lesson was like the 'Warden' of the place. During the facility tour, it seemed like it was his way or the highway, with no interest in new process ideas. To sum it up, when the son and plant manager started asking questions, I knew this wasn't the right fit. I intentionally messed up the last questions. Glad I never heard back from Magma Power.

I was contacted via Linkedin by colleagues who knew people working there. The first step was a 20-minute phone screen, which I passed, and then I was invited for an in-person interview. The interview was a bit challenging because the two hiring managers had very different ideas about the job requirements and how they should be carried out. This created some awkwardness as I had to try and satisfy both of them. Unfortunately, I didn't get an offer because I lacked semiconductor industry experience. I've managed various types of inventory across different sectors like consumer goods (health & beauty, household items, food), chemicals, and paper/pulp, and consistently achieved significant improvements for companies. It seems they couldn't see the bigger picture beyond the specific industry requirement.
