Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Macquarie Group.
Investment Banking Associate
It was a pretty straightforward interview process. Started with a call from the recruiter, then I had an in-person meeting with two Vice Presidents. After that, I had two 30-minute calls with the Managing Directors, and I also had to complete a psychometric assessment. The whole thing has taken about two weeks so far.
- Can you discuss your prior experience in financial modeling?
- What is your experience regarding project ownership?
Investment Banking Analyst
The interview process spanned many rounds, with conversations involving associates, VPs, and directors. While the core theme remained consistent, the sheer number of rounds (over five) made it feel quite lengthy. A case study was administered over a weekend, released on the day itself and requiring completion within three hours. A financial model template was provided, but significant customization of the model within that template was necessary, so it was not a simple plug-and-play situation.
- Can you explain your interest in the industry or specific coverage areas like natural resources or infrastructure?
Investment Banking Analyst
My interview experience felt pretty conversational, likely because I had interned at Deloitte the previous summer and had connections with some of the interviewers' contacts in Sydney. The questions weren't too tough, mostly revolving around my Deloitte internship and a strong emphasis on my motivations for corporate finance, more so than other interviews. It seemed my interviewers had seen my feedback reports and were impressed, so they focused on my drive. There was a good amount of casual chat throughout, which might be more about my specific situation than the general interview style. If interviewers feel good about your performance and connection, they often steer the conversation this way. However, it's still important to use the STAR method even for seemingly small questions; being too casual can be a downside.
- Which class did you dislike the most, and what were your reasons?
- What motivates your application to corporate finance?
- Could you share some key takeaways from your summer internship at Deloitte?
