First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Macatawa Bank.
Underwriter
I talked to HR and the department manager first. They asked me some basic questions and about my experience with the job. Then, two days later, I got an email for a second interview with the head of HR and the head of Underwriting. They asked pretty much the same questions as the first time.
- What makes you interested in Macatawa Bank?
- Could you describe your background in processing and underwriting?
Credit Analyst
The first interview involves meeting three people one-on-one. You'll start with someone from HR, then meet a VP from a corporate division, and finally, the person who would be your direct supervisor. If they're impressed, they'll have you complete an online personality test. If you're still a strong candidate after that, you'll have another meeting with your potential direct supervisor. I expected a job offer because they told me to dress casually, but it turned out to be a 'casual Wednesday or Friday' thing. Then, unexpectedly, I had to take a pop quiz, which I wasn't ready for. It tested how I'd perform as a credit analyst by having me review a fake company's financials and explain their performance, including year-over-year comparisons. Make sure to analyze more than just profitability; check inventory and all other changes from the previous year. This was especially challenging as a recent grad with no experience, applying for a role requiring 3-5 years of experience.
- What information would you request from someone seeking a loan, and what particular aspects of their financial statements would you examine?
- When someone requests to borrow money, what specific items within their financial statements would you scrutinize?
Customer Service Representative
First, you'll talk to HR, and then you'll have a chat with the hiring manager. If HR really likes you but the hiring manager doesn't pick you, they might reach out about other jobs or suggest you apply for different roles.
- Can you share an instance where you had to handle a customer who was upset or angry?
Intern
It was pretty straightforward, I talked with two different teams and then got the offer. They asked about my past projects and how they fit the role, and also about the company. Everyone was really nice.
