M1 Interview Questions
& Process

The interview process started with a recruiter call, which was pretty standard. Then, I had a chat with the hiring manager, but they were quite aggressive with their questions, which felt a bit off and made me question if this was the right place. Next up was a case study I got beforehand, and I discussed my prepared answers with two team members, which went well. The final round involved three separate 1:1 meetings with two directors and the CEO. One director was great, really easy to talk to. The other product director kept cutting me off and seemed to have a massive ego, which was a big red flag. The CEO, though, was very straightforward, friendly, and engaging. It felt like a mixed bag with the interviewers; some gave me serious doubts about working there, but the CEO seemed fantastic. I was surprised not to get an offer, but honestly, I don't think their business model is viable long-term, and they'll likely be spread too thin in the finance sector. I predict they won't last five years, though the CEO will probably do well.

The whole thing took about 2 months and included a take-home project and a 2-hour final interview. After the last interview, they said I'd know by the end of the week. A week later, I hadn't heard anything, so I followed up, still nothing. I tried again, and no response. Then, the recruiter left a voicemail saying they weren't moving forward. I tried calling back like she suggested, but it just went to voicemail. I sent another email thanking them and asking for feedback, but again, no reply. Honestly, for the time they expected me to put in, I thought I'd at least get a timely response, or any response really. Even though I liked the team and M1's mission, their lack of communication and respect for my time makes me wonder about the work environment, and I'm kinda glad it didn't work out.

The interview process was pretty smooth. First, a recruiter reached out after I applied online. Then, there was a code screen or pair programming session with a software engineer. The final stage was a virtual on-site loop with people from different teams. Everyone involved was friendly and professional. Even though the team and the work sounded really interesting, the benefits (health, vision, dental) were pretty weak compared to other places, so I ended up declining the offer.

I applied for the job and then the recruiter reached out for a phone screening. It was about 30-40 minutes and was pretty introductory. After that, I was asked to meet the Hiring Manager. The interview seemed to go well and they said I'd hear back in a couple of business days. I followed up a few times since then but haven't heard anything back.
