So first, there was a prelim assignment to qualify for the interview, which was about A/B testing and funnel analytics. Then, Round 1 involved a walkthrough of that assignment, discussing the tools and tech used, and understanding the rationale behind each step to gauge product intuition. This round also included case study questions and behavioral questions.

Behavioral Technical Presentation

It was pretty standard with the design challenge, recruiter interview, and hiring manager interview. The recruiter was mostly on time, with one week of silence due to illness which is understandable. They asked about my process and how I've handled challenges. I felt prepared since I've interviewed for senior UX roles at big companies, and I've wanted to work at Lumosity for over 5 years. However, the manager called me 30 minutes early, catching me off guard while I was finishing a project. I had to rush to my car to find a quiet place to talk. I could barely hear him, but I answered as best I could. My feedback was that my design work was impressive, but they wanted someone more 'senior'. I think my abilities didn't come through over the phone, and I wonder what would have happened if I wasn't caught off guard and made a bad first impression. I haven't really learned how to improve for the next interview, and usually even bad interviews teach you something.

I applied via their website and then a recruiter reached out to check my resume and recent project link. I had a 30-minute phone call with the recruiter within two weeks. If that went well, I was told I'd be invited for an in-person interview at their San Francisco office. The interviewer began by outlining the interview structure and explained their work and what they expect from candidates. They mentioned they've had good results hiring from bootcamps.

I had a two-step interview process. First, I chatted with HR about whether I'd be a good cultural fit. They asked about my goals and past jobs, you know, the usual stuff. Then, a manager from one of the software teams gave me more technical questions. I had to solve some tricky programming problems on the spot. I didn't get the first role, but here's the neat part: HR felt I was a good fit and connected me with another manager. This manager thought my skills were a better match, and I got hired!
