Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Lumen.
Intern
First, there was a Hirevue recorded video interview with standard questions. Then, I had a chat with HR, which was also pretty standard. Finally, I interviewed with the team I would be working with, which was more about getting to know me as a person and seeing how I solve problems. For that last interview, I'd say definitely research Lumen a lot.
- Can you share an instance where you faced a challenge and how you successfully navigated it?
Intern
For Lumen's 2024 HireVue interview, anticipate a mix of behavioral and situational questions. These aim to gauge how you manage cross-functional teamwork, set priorities, and keep up with industry changes. You might also be asked about your experience making quick decisions and your knowledge of technologies like 5G, IoT, and cloud infrastructure that Lumen uses. Typical questions will also cover how you deal with deadlines, manage your tasks, and adapt when project needs change. Practicing with real examples of your skills and background can help you get ready.
- Can you tell me about a significant challenge you encountered and how you successfully navigated it?
- Describe a situation where you had to work with a challenging team member and explain how you managed it.
Intern
I just finished the recorded interview, so I don't know yet if I'll move forward. It seems like they make everyone who applies for any role do a one-way video interview - I got the link right after the application confirmation email. Honestly, I find these one-way video interviews kind of dehumanizing, but it's even worse when companies make candidates prep and record answers before they've even looked at applications, which feels super disrespectful of our time. Plus, the questions in the video interview aren't specific to any job; they're clearly the same for everyone. It's a set of 7 behavioral questions, with 30 seconds to prep and only a minute to answer, and you only get one shot. You really need to think fast! After that, there were two 'games' - I'm not sure if they were for my specific role, but they had nothing to do with it. One was matching shapes, and the other was a memory/math game. I've done one-way video interviews before, and while they're not great, at least other companies review applications first and ask relevant questions. This whole experience really turned me off Lumen.
- Can you share an instance where you had to make a swift decision based on conflicting information from various sources?
- Describe a time when you had to quickly adjust to a change while working on a project.
- Tell me about a time you had to get ready for a difficult project or assignment.
