Developer Analyst
After a couple of phone interviews, I had a same-day onsite where I met with four people in one afternoon. They were really eager to get me in quickly. The first interviewer focused on the analytics and BI side of things. It felt okay, a little weird tone-wise, but they seemed to think I was a good fit and needed the role filled fast. The next interviewer was the manager, maybe the department head, and it was a casual, short chat to get acquainted. They mentioned other openings, and so did two others. The third interviewer was the toughest, tasked with provoking a reaction by asking how I'd handle unwinnable scenarios – I think they're just gauging my response, not looking for a right answer. That interview had a really confrontational vibe, which might reflect the company culture. The last person was a laid-back senior software engineer who really liked one of my portfolio samples and suggested I use it elsewhere, which struck me as odd since I was showing it for this job. There were some easy technical questions about CMS development. I followed up after two weeks of silence, but still haven't heard back after a lot of communication before the interview.
- Which programming language do you prefer for application development?
- How would you approach winning unwinnable situations?
Sales Manager
This involved video conferencing and in-person interviews in different locations with people at various levels. There was a lot of screening for personality and cultural fit with the company. The process might have changed a lot since then because now there's more focus on cloud and marketing, compared to the sales-led and channel management business it was back then. But the people were really good and paid a lot of attention to cultural fit. The overall USA culture is Austin based.
- Can you detail your previous sales experience?
- What is your background in managing sales teams?
- How have you utilized video conferencing in your sales activities?
Inside Sales Representative
The recruiters at Lifesize are good at reaching out quickly if your resume seems like a match. The initial call is pretty casual and short. After that, you'll have a brief chat with a hiring manager or another senior person, about 30 minutes face-to-face, where you'll talk about your background and they'll share details about the job and company. The last part is the toughest: expect to be there for over 3 hours, meeting with 3-4 people, including potential peers and your direct manager. Interviewers vary in style; some are relaxed, others intense, asking whatever comes to mind. They focus heavily on your work ethic and values, not so much on technical product knowledge because video conferencing is relatively new to many.
- What would be your strategy for developing a new territory and growing it through new Channel Partners?
Product Manager
Applied online. Took about 4 weeks to get a scheduling request and speak with the HR manager. Quick video interview with HR, and then moved on to speak with the director of product via video conference. Coordination between HR and myself was consistent and responsive up until after the last interview. Complete radio silence/ghosted/no updates provided - not even a canned automated response. Unfortunately one of the most unprofessional HR processes I've seen in my career. This does not reflect well on the company. Luckily, not a huge loss as I accepted other interviews and ultimately a better offer, but I think Lifesize should review their process and stick to industry best practices.
